LUDHIANA: In order to provide free joint replacement and surgery facility to poor patients, a team of 45 doctors -under the banner of 'Operation Walk' -were in the city from USA to operate upon 46 such people. The team, which was in India for the first time, conducted a three-day camp at DMC Hospital. Medical director of 'Operation Walk' Dr Paul Khuneja said the team keeps on holding such camps in South America. "The motive behind visiting Ludhiana is to provide free joint replacement to poor patients who cannot afford the treatment. The aim is to eradicate joint problems by providing financial and medical help to these citizens." Talking about the medical facilities available in India, the surgeon said the country still lacked behind when compared to America. "But it's soon catching up as many intellectuals are here to work for the country. People here are stronger than American citizens and do not get scared of pain. However, everybody in America gets treatment because they are insured," he added. Professor in orthopaedics at DMC Deepak Jain said the hospital had organized the camp in collaboration with Operation Walk to provide locals the benefit of latest techniques. "It will be made a regular feature here," he added. Meanwhile, Satya Narayan, a laborer from Bihar, said he had met with an accident a year ago but could not get the treatment due to financial constraints. "I am happy that they treated me free of cost," he smiled. | |

Dr Mohammad Yamin,: A DOCTOR & A GENTLEMAN

A DOCTOR & A GENTLEMAN
The first surgeon to perform knee replacement surgery this side of Chandigarh, Dr. Mohammed Yamin remains rooted to the ground with humility on his side.
Dimpal Jain unveils the shy Doctor to reveal his multidimensional personality. The first thing that strikes you about Prof. Mohammed Yamin is that despite his achievements as a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, he is such a humble and down-to-earth person. A devoted family man, the much-accomplished surgeon is not only an inspiration for his Dayanand Medical College & Hospital colleagues, but a true mentor to his students. After all, Dr Yamin holds the distinction of being the first surgeon to perform knee replacements in north India after P.G.I. Chandigarh. Since that first time, Dr Yamin has performed around 1,000 such surgeries and at present, does at least ten in a month. He also keeps himself updated with the research and development being carried out in the orthopaedic world.
The modest doctor is proud of his humble background. He comes from a farmers' family of Malerkotla and did his basic schooling in his hometown. His parents' motivation and aspirations led him to taking up the medical stream. After his MBBS from the D.M.C., he opted for M.S. in Orthopaedics, an ideal choice giving him an opportunity to collectively explore his interest in surgery with a touch of engineering. Further specialisation happened at the renowned Royal College of Surgery, U.K. But his roots pulled him back to his hometown and his alma mater, the D.M.C. in 1992 where he has since, been serving and helping the suffering.
Dr Yamin is well recognised abroad and nearly half of his patients comprise NRIs. His students are working all over the world. In fact, teaching is a passion with him through which he tries to spread and multiply the wealth of all that he has earned in his distinguished career. Unlike a few of his peers, the generous surgeon believes in motivating and helping his students with the vast knowledge he has acquired over the years.
We tried to explore the personality behind the all too visible surgeon and were pleasantly surprised at the goodwill he enjoys among all who come in contact with him be it his patients, colleagues, friends or even his own family. The doctor is all praise for his dietician wife, Mrs. Manju Yamin, the woman behind this successful man. The couple belonging to different religions met in Ludhiana and the maiden was completely bowled over by this charming and struggling doctor. Seventeen years later, the still very much-in-love couple cherishes the nest they have built for their family, including two children, Haroon and Alia.
Dr Yamin tries to live life to the fullest. And how does he unwind? His philosophy is to make time for all his interests and hobbies. And if things get too big to tackle immediately, “he prefers to take a nap,” says his better-half revealing the siesta-loving side of her husband. And she makes sure he isn't disturbed and robbed of his much-needed rest. A complete family man, Dr Yamin makes all efforts to ensure that his profession does not interfere with his family matters.
This very efficient master at time management has a very well planned routine and barring emergencies, cannot be enticed away from the time he spends with his family. He is a conscious father determined to provide emotional stability to his kids. For him, parenting is the top priority. Any invitation to a stag party is certain to be turned down. Invite him to a party with the family and this serious doctor makes way for a keen dancer and fun-loving party animal.

Free Hip&knee Replacement Surgeries For Poor
Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in association with Rubin Institute, USA, will launch “Operation Walk” to offer free hip and knee replacement surgeries to poor patients.
Dr Mohammad Yamin, professor and head of orthopaedics, said “Operation Walk” was a private, non-profit, volunteer medical service organisation that provided free surgical treatment to patients with disabling arthritis or other debilitating bone and joint conditions in developing countries.
Orthopaedic surgeons of the DMCH and a team of Rubin Institute would update themselves in advanced surgical techniques, treatment for diseases and recovery procedures for hip and knee joint conditions.
The organisation has so far operated on more than 3,000 patients in Russia, Cuba, Nepal, China, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Mexico, El Salvador and the US.

The DMCH will regularly organise awareness camps with the help of charitable organisations in various parts of the state.
Knee and hip replacements are among the most cost-effective medical procedures, which greatly enhance the quality of life of those suffering with arthritic pain and thus, enabling them to be more active members of their community, added Dr Pankaj Mahindra, assistant professor of orthopaedics.
The collaboration will involve joint activities in areas of research and training including video-conferencing and telemedicine, clinical fellowship and lecturer exchange programme, joint clinical studies and establishing charity care.
Earlier this year, Dr Paul Khanuja, director of hip and knee replacement surgery, Rubin Institute, and medical director of “Operation Walk”, Maryland, visited the DMCH and examined various medical facilities, including outpatient department, operation theatre complex and supportive services, at the hospital.
