The first surgeon to perform knee replacement surgery this side of Chandigarh, Dr. Mohammed Yamin remains rooted to the ground with humility on his side.
Dimpal Jain unveils the shy Doctor to reveal his multidimensional personality. The first thing that strikes you about Prof. Mohammed Yamin is that despite his achievements as a renowned orthopaedic surgeon, he is such a humble and down-to-earth person. A devoted family man, the much-accomplished surgeon is not only an inspiration for his Dayanand Medical College & Hospital colleagues, but a true mentor to his students. After all, Dr Yamin holds the distinction of being the first surgeon to perform knee replacements in north India after P.G.I. Chandigarh. Since that first time, Dr Yamin has performed around 1,000 such surgeries and at present, does at least ten in a month. He also keeps himself updated with the research and development being carried out in the orthopaedic world.
The modest doctor is proud of his humble background. He comes from a farmers' family of Malerkotla and did his basic schooling in his hometown. His parents' motivation and aspirations led him to taking up the medical stream. After his MBBS from the D.M.C., he opted for M.S. in Orthopaedics, an ideal choice giving him an opportunity to collectively explore his interest in surgery with a touch of engineering. Further specialisation happened at the renowned Royal College of Surgery, U.K. But his roots pulled him back to his hometown and his alma mater, the D.M.C. in 1992 where he has since, been serving and helping the suffering.
Dr Yamin is well recognised abroad and nearly half of his patients comprise NRIs. His students are working all over the world. In fact, teaching is a passion with him through which he tries to spread and multiply the wealth of all that he has earned in his distinguished career. Unlike a few of his peers, the generous surgeon believes in motivating and helping his students with the vast knowledge he has acquired over the years.
We tried to explore the personality behind the all too visible surgeon and were pleasantly surprised at the goodwill he enjoys among all who come in contact with him be it his patients, colleagues, friends or even his own family. The doctor is all praise for his dietician wife, Mrs. Manju Yamin, the woman behind this successful man. The couple belonging to different religions met in Ludhiana and the maiden was completely bowled over by this charming and struggling doctor. Seventeen years later, the still very much-in-love couple cherishes the nest they have built for their family, including two children, Haroon and Alia.
Dr Yamin tries to live life to the fullest. And how does he unwind? His philosophy is to make time for all his interests and hobbies. And if things get too big to tackle immediately, “he prefers to take a nap,” says his better-half revealing the siesta-loving side of her husband. And she makes sure he isn't disturbed and robbed of his much-needed rest. A complete family man, Dr Yamin makes all efforts to ensure that his profession does not interfere with his family matters.
This very efficient master at time management has a very well planned routine and barring emergencies, cannot be enticed away from the time he spends with his family. He is a conscious father determined to provide emotional stability to his kids. For him, parenting is the top priority. Any invitation to a stag party is certain to be turned down. Invite him to a party with the family and this serious doctor makes way for a keen dancer and fun-loving party animal.
